President's Letter

Greetings to all LAVGC members. I hope this finds you and yours healthy and looking forward to a new year. We can hope that with the vaccines becoming available, things will improve, and we will be able to go about our business.

A bit of rain early this week and more due tomorrow sure helps my garden, and we could use a lot more. But I like it coming a little at a time rather than a deluge. Our bit of cold nights recently it made for a great fall color, but I do not remember having as many leaves on the ground as I have this year. I am trying to balance between too many leaves covering my plantings and some to help keep the moisture in the ground. I guess we just must deal with what Mother Nature gives us.

We received our copies of “The Miracle of Monarchs”. It is a colorful presentation of the cycle of the Monarch and other butterflies. Written by Cathie Moog and if you are interested in ordering one of the books, send me an email and I will provide the information. I also mentioned at our December meeting we had received word from the Pollinator Posse on their recent research in the Bay Area. There has apparently been a shift in behavior; they are seeing butterflies stay in the area longer with very few at the overwintering sites. They are not sure why this shift is happening but request that, if you have Tropical Milkweed ‘ ascelpias curravasica’, please cut them down so they do not entice the butterflies to stay. Any caterpillars that emerge on these plants now will likely be diseased.

I am pleased to announce that the LAVGC has been awarded a grant from the National Garden Club Plant America Committee for $1,000 to be used in replacing roses in the Hansen Rose Garden in Livermore. Dana Boyd and Lois Barber put in a request last year and it did not make the cut, but using the information they gathered and tweaking it a bit, we resubmitted and were chosen to receive the highest amount awarded, $1,000. Watch for further information as the team works on this exciting project.

Workshop Wednesday’s presented by the Pacific Region will start again on January 6 with a discussion on Planting with Bulbs. These meetings are held Wednesdays at 9:30 am. If you are interested in the list of subjects you can contact Robin Pokorski, PRGDIRECTOR@gmail.com.

In an effort to brighten someone’s day a small group has come together to anonymously gift a plant with the hope of giving light in the darkness of the pandemic. If this is of interest to you, you can check it out https://christinagray.com/planting-love-project.

Please look for the proposal for a new Community Service Committee in this newsletter. We will be voting on accepting this at our January meeting.

Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy new year. Jeri Stark, President.
